Media Detective Teacher Training Workshop Series
August 6 - August 8
August 6, 7, and 8, 2024, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm EST
Media Detective is an evidence-based, substance misuse prevention program designed to teach third to fifth grade students how to critically analyze and reject the thousands of messages that glamorize substances that they encounter every day.
In order to support high-quality implementation of the Media Detective program by new instructors, iRT has created an open enrollment, live, online teacher training workshop series and teacher certification process. A randomized study proved that teachers who complete these training workshops are better at logically analyzing media messages, and have a deeper appreciation of the value of media literacy education for combatting substance use than teachers who did not complete the training.
The Media Detective teacher training consist of 3, 3-hour, live, virtual, interactive workshops followed by an online teacher certification test. Teachers will learn and practice media literacy skills, including how to logically analyze ads and other media messages. They will also experience the program, be taught implementation strategies for each lesson, and analyze how each lesson is designed to increase critical thinking skills and prevent substance misuse.
