Evaluating the short-term impact of media aware parent, a web-based program for parents with the goal of adolescent sexual health promotion. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Youth and Adolescence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 48(9), 1686-1706. doi:10.1007\/s10964-019-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31304562\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">01077-0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Abstract<\/h2>\n<p><strong class=\"sub-title\">Objectives: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assess the short-term effects of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Aware Parent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on parent\u2013adolescent communication, adolescent sexual health outcomes, and media-related outcomes across a one-month timeframe.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sub-title\">Methods: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents were randomly assigned to the intervention (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Aware Parent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or active control group (online access to medically accurate information on adolescent sexual health).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sub-title\">Results: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intervention improved parent\u2013adolescent communication quality as rated by both parents and youth. Youth were more likely to understand that their parent did not want them to have sex at this early age. Youth reported more agency over hook-ups, more positive attitudes about sexual health communication and contraception\/protection, and more self-efficacy to use contraception\/protection, if they decide to have sexual activity.
