PMCID: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28989205\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMC5628508<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Abstract<\/h2>\n<p><b>Objectives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The present study investigates the effectiveness of a family-based, online media literacy education (MLE) program for substance abuse prevention in children from rural areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Method<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 83 families were randomly assigned to receive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media Detective Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MDF; n = 47) or a control computer program (n = 36) between pre- and posttest questionnaires. A total of 51% (N = 42) completed a 3-month follow-up questionnaire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Results<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children receiving MDF reported a significant reduction in their use of substances over time compared to children in the control group (d = \u2212.80).
