thus, assessment tools are needed to help educators, mental health professionals, and researchers better assess social-emotional abilities in youth. Also, preventive interventions are needed to build new skills or modify potentially maladaptive skills to improve social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-0cbab28ace3c823cbf0\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-ourwork\" href=\"#tab-0cbab28ace3c823cbf0\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\"><i class=\"fontawesome-icon fa-chart-line fas\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"font-size:20px;\"><\/i>OUR WORK<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-ourwork\" id=\"tab-0cbab28ace3c823cbf0\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Given that social-emotional skills are essential to the development of healthy social behavior, iRT has created several manualized, evidenced-based intervention programs that focus on improving social-emotional abilities in children and adolescents and can be implemented in elementary, middle, high, or after-school settings.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, learning how to be aware or mindful of one\u2019s feelings and thoughts is a central part of the mindfulness education programs developed by iRT for typically developing youth, as well as for youth with intellectual or developmental disabilities. One practical goal of this research is to create tools that educators, mental health professionals, and researchers can use to assess social-emotional skill levels and the effectiveness of interventions, as well as examine the use of these types of measures to establish intervention goals related to social-emotional functioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, iRT developed an online tool to assess preschool-aged children\u2019s emotion recognition skills. This tool includes photographic stimuli of preschool-aged children of different races and ethnicities expressing positive and negative emotions on their faces (which were coded using the Facial Action Coding System) and with their bodies. The photographic stimuli and associated questions are embedded in a software program that is accessible on computers, laptops, and tablets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iRT has also developed an online tool that assess social information procession skills in children and adolescents based on the well-known Social Information Processing (SIP) Theory. The software includes videotaped vignettes, filmed from the first-person perceptive that depict common misunderstandings among peers. Each vignette shows a negative outcome for the victim and ambiguous intent on the part of the perpetrator.
